Fine weather and a warm welcome awaited visitors to the Caithness and Sutherland Local Mòd which took place in Wick at the weekend.
Volunteers and adjudicators came from as far away as Fort William, Glasgow, Banff and the Western Isles.
Raymond Bremner, Chairperson of the local branch of An Comunn Gàidhealach said “There was a great atmosphere on the day and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The main notable comment we had from the adjudicators on the day and also from the visiting volunteers, many of whom are involved in Local Mòds in other areas, was the high standard of performance and wealth of talent that we have here. Parents, teachers and volunteers have been doing great work with the young folk and it is very much paying off. We have received invitations to encourage as many of our local youngsters to take part in other Local Mòds which would lead us to believe that they are recognised as an established part of the Mòd scene now following their successes in recent years.”
The committee and volunteers are to be commended for the work they undertook during the day and for helping to make it so successful.”
The event culminated in a Gala Concert and Cèilidh with the Iain Angus MacLeod Band who featured on Friday evening at a very successful pre-Mòd event in the Old Smiddy Inn in Thrumster. Guest artiste Alasdair Whyte, Mòd Gold Medallist from the Isle of Mull performed in front of a well attended evening which also featured performances from the main prize winners of competitions held during the day’s event.
Melvich, Lairg and Nairn Gaelic Choirs were all present and provided Mass Choir singing to the delight of the people in the bar at the Nethercliffe Hotel as well as at the Gala Concert in the evening before departing for home in the late hours of the evening.
The Local Mòd in Caithness and Sutherland is the only Local Mòd to emulate the National Event by being hosted in a different location in the area each year and is likely to be held in Bettyhill in Sutherland next year before returning to the county once more in 2014.
