Caithness & Sutherland Mod

Published: 13 Jun 2013

Sutherland and Caithness Provincial Mod June 1 2013.

The sun shone, the children sang and the pipers played – they came from Easter Ross, East and Central Sutherland and Caithness to Bettyhill. Senior and Primary staff and pupils at Farr High School had transformed the school into a very welcoming venue for performers and visitors alike.

This year’s Provincial Mod saw entries well up on previous years particularly in the instrumental sections. Newly introduced into the syllabus was a Cròileagan section with entries from Bettyhill and Thurso. The positive influence of Gaelic Medium schools and the Feisean movement was, as always, very apparent.

Rona Macleod of Bonar Bridge was the Junior star performer of the day closely followed by her brother Duncan. Melvich Primary school choir won the junior choral event and Lairg Gaelic Choir the main senior choral, taking home the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland Challenge Cup.

Musical entertainment was provided at Strathy Hall in the evening, starring Rona Lightfoot, Kathleen Boyle and James Graham along with the day’s prizewinners

The committee acknowledge the support they receive from Highland Council, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Fèisean nan Gàidheal and An Comunn Gàidhealach.
