With only 15 months until the Royal National Mod comes to the Western Isles, fundraising and promotion work continues to gather momentum. Since January several committee members as well as other able volunteers have been involved in the Mod 2011 Challenge. Over a 12 week period, participants were challenged to complete a geographical distance in the Western Isles by covering their miles through a range of different disciplines. Runners, walkers, rowers and cyclists emerged from the woodwork and completed 2011 miles. Infact, those who completed the Challenge continue to clock up the miles and at the time of going to press the Committee had completed 2543 miles. The Committee are delighted with the success of the Challenge and are considering what physical feats will be involved in the next 2011 Challenge which will commence in January 2011!
Following on from the success of the Mod 2011 Challenge, a 5k will take place on Saturday the 25th September 2010 in Stornoway. As the Mod 2011 Challenge draws to a conclusion at the end of August 2010, this is the perfect opportunity to keep the momentum going in the run up to the Caithness Mod! If you are a choir member who wants to ensure you fit into that kilt in Caithness, this is the ideal fitness solution for you!
The Committee were encouraged to organise the event due to the ever increasing popularity of 5k’s across the islands and indeed across the country. Participants can walk or run round the 3.2 mile course and there will be live entertainment for folk as they cross the finish line! If you are a regular runner, why not take part and try and achieve a personal best? If you are a total novice, why not start training now? An eight week beginners training programme for a 5k event is available at www.jogscotland.org.uk. And every penny raised will go towards the fundraising endeavors ahead of the 2011 Mod! More information to follow very shortly!
