Many of you will be aware that 2018 is Scotland’s Year of Young People. Throughout the year, Scotland is putting its young people in the spotlight, celebrating their talents, contributions and creating new opportunities for them to shine.
At the Royal National Mòd, our main aim is to promote and celebrate Scotland’s unique Gaelic cultural heritage and without Scotland’s young people, this would not be possible. The amount of talent that is showcased by Scotland’s youngsters at the Mòd continues to insipre and encourage us year on year and so this year’s theme could not be more appropriate for the Mòd.
This year, with funding from EventScotland, we have been able to introduce new projects for young people. In recent months, tutors from FèisSgoil have been going into schools in the Dunoon area to help them prepare for Mòd competitions as part of our Mòd Academy initiative. The Mòd Academy is a great opportunity for youngsters to learn and develop their music and Gaelic skills and we also hope that it builds confidence to perform at the Mòd when it comes to Dunoon in October.
We have also been able to run Drama workshops for young people in Dunoon which we hope will lead to an increase in children becoming involved in Gaelic drama. We are looking forward to seeing their performance at the Mòd in October.
We also hope to see more youngsters involved with shinty at this year’s Mòd and will be working with the Camanachd Association to arrange a junior Mòd Cup match before the annual senior match.
As part of our YOYP celebrations, we have also established a Young Person’s Committee to give young people the opportunity to have their say and share their ideas about what they would like to see happen at the Mòd. It is very encouraging to see how passionate our committee is about the Mòd and about making the Mòd exciting and fun for all ages. Over the next few months, we will be working hard to make some of their ideas happen.
Keep an eye out for more information about our YOYP programme of events on our website and on our social media pages. If you would like to find out more about YOYP and events happening throughout Scotland this year, please visit https://young.scot/yoyp2018/« Back to Mod News List
