Maletta MacPhail lives in Shawbost on the west side of Lewis, in the Western Isles of Scotland. She won the Ailsa Quaich for adult poetry at the 1998 Royal National Mòd. In 2005 she co-authored "Seanfhachail is Seanchas" , a collection of proverbs and sayings.

This collection of her poems derives its title from a piece called "Culaidh", for which she won the Scottish Gaelic section of the Fèile Filíochta competition in Ireland in 2001.
