ROYAL NATIONAL Mòd partners with blas festival for community

Am Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail (The Royal National Mòd), Scotland’s biggest Gaelic Cultural Festival, is partnering with the Blas Festival which takes place from Friday 5th to Saturday 13th September to perform in residential care homes and hospitals throughout the Highlands.

With a musical performance set for each night, the two festivals will be collaborating across six dates and venues, to ensure that Gaelic culture can be appreciated by everyone.

Starting with ‘Còisir G’, the Highland Council’s Youth Gaelic choir, performing in Ach an Eas Care Home in Inverness on Saturday 6 September, other highlights will include ceilidh band Mo Creach entertaining residents of Strathallan House, Strathpeffer on Tuesday 9th, and instrumentalist Rhona Sutherland accompanied by Gairloch High School pupils performing in Strathburn House, Gairloch on Thursday 10th.

John Morrison, chief executive of An Comunn Gàidhealach, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for both The Royal National Mòd and the Blas festival to give something back to the community. Gaelic culture is colourful and rich enough to entertain everybody, so this is the perfect chance to ensure that those who may not be able to get to the performance venues can still experience everything we have to offer.

“We’re looking forward to returning to Inverness for The Royal National Mòd in October, it will be our first time in the city since 1997 so it will be very special. It is a long overdue Highland Homecoming!”

Arthur Cormack of Fèisean nan Gàidheal, the organisation responsible for the Blas Festival said: “We are delighted to be working with An Comunn Gàidhealach, Live Music Now and Music in Hospitals to bring musicians and singers into care homes and hospitals as part of the communities programme that takes place during the festival. Blas has a special focus on the involvement of young people and many will be appearing alongside some of the finest musicians and singers in the festival’s 43 main events. We are especially pleased that some of those taking part in the Royal National Mòd in October will get the opportunity to hone their performance skills in these sessions offering entertainment to folk who perhaps cannot get out to some of the events.”

The Royal National Mòd is Scotland’s biggest Gaelic Cultural Festival. Now in its 122nd year, the event is the most important festival of the Gaelic language in Scotland. It is a signature event in the Highland Homecoming celebrations.

Organised by An Comunn Gàidhealach, one of the world’s oldest and most respected national Gaelic organisation, the nine day spectacular will take place from Friday 10th to Saturday 18th October. It will feature competitions in Highland Dancing, Gaelic Music and Song, Sport, Literature and Drama, offering Gaelic speakers of all levels to compete. It will bring thousands of competitors and spectators from throughout Scotland, the UK and from all corners of the globe including USA, Australia and Canada to Inverness.

2014 will also see the biggest Fringe event ever take place alongside the competitions. This will include concerts, book and CD launches, music sessions, poetry, dance and other art forms of every description.
